As Colorado's touchdown leader, Evan Atkin of Moffat County did not slow down | CraigDailyPress.com

For Moffat County High School football, this is a monster season, between the unilateral scoreboard, the domineering defensive effort and the winning spirit of all the Bulldog teams.

And even though MCHS junior Evan Atkin has as much trust in his teammates as in himself, it's hard to ignore his achievements this fall.

Evan had more touchdowns at the end of the regular season than any other player in Colorado. In addition to the 28-year-old Colorado athlete's most sought-after touchdown, his three catches made him the only kid in the century-old state with 31 touchdowns.

Coupled with a PAT this season and a safety-the latter was picked up in a block punt against Coal Ridge-his 189 points also put him at the top of the scorer in all divisions.

This fall, he added yards in all possible abilities—1,256 rushes, 336 catches, 80 passes, 66 returns, 12 returns, and 19 intercepted returns—in the past nine. Over 100 yards in seven of the games, and he has no plans to back down completely when the Bulldogs enter the playoffs.

Trying to contain him is like trying to stuff a tornado into a can; he looks for every possible gap in the opponent's defense and fights for every possible distance, from the closest 1 yard line and the farthest goal line 84 yards Score.

Evan said that his success largely comes from his teammates on the offensive line to provide him with running space.

"Getting a lot of pieces would help. I just tried to burn them and beat them at that time. Go offline, it's more about power, and then the second level is more about speed," he said. "Usually, once I get past the blockers to reach the second level, I go outside and try to beat them in the game."

Although he has a lot of end zone runs this year without being hurt by defenders at all, Evan has also worked hard to become a durable running back.

"I always try to change direction. I do a lot of footwork exercises. It's all for tackles and to be able to stand up from hit after hit," he said.

He pointed out that he has been following in the footsteps of Caleb Frink, who is the leading charge for the Bulldogs in the 2020 senior season.

"I learned a lot from Caleb and trained with him. I am very happy to have such a leader follow," Atkin said.

Like Flink, Atkin is also capable of offensive, defensive, and special teams. As a bulldog punter, as a linebacker, he only trails the senior Ethan Hafee in total steals. Hafey), 51 times.

Being a multisport athlete also benefits him a lot, especially from his track and field experience earlier this year.

"The track definitely gave me faster speed and more jumping ability. It mainly comes from the ankles and hips," he said.

In his sophomore year, Evan won the league championship in high jump and long jump, and tied for third with the former and seventh in the state finals. In the same season, he was also a strong hurdler, but he was limited to participating in four state events. Teammate Logan Hafey won the state championship in the 300-meter hurdle race.

Evan, Logan, Ian Hafey and Taran Teeter-all of whom are on the football roster this fall-also finished sixth in the 4×200m relay.

Evan also plans to play basketball in the winter. He said that training for one sport often affects other sports.

"I have been trying to maintain this state. Football is good for strengthening strength, so I just try to bring a lot of explosive power to basketball. Then, running and jumping are very suitable for track and field sports," he said.

Evan’s brother Jared is also a Bulldog track star and a promising football player. Despite his multiple injuries, Evan said this taught him how to avoid injuries on the grill.

The 16-year-old is ranked fifth among eight siblings: Wesley, 23; Taylor, 21; Jared, 20; McGrady, 18; Avery, 15; Mason, 12 ; And Morgan, 11.

His siblings, girlfriend Sadie Smilanich, and parents Stacy and Lee cheered for him all autumn.

"It's great to have their support and show them my abilities. Especially my grandparents, they have to watch it online," he said.

Stacy Atkin said that watching her son participate in the game is a joy, and every time he does, she can see the true love of the game. She noticed that when her son got rid of defense, zigzags in all directions and finally celebrated scoring with his teammates, she was repeatedly excited.

"He likes sports, but he still focuses on the fun on the court," she said.

A highlight of this fall is seven consecutive victories. MoCo Football is entering the playoffs this weekend, and Evan and his company are seeking to avoid being complacent with past achievements.

"Our team, it's great to get to this point and maintain such an unbeaten record for such a long time. As a team, we just want to do our best," he said. "The state championship will be great, but we have to do our best to play one after another to see what we can do."
